The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1879.

It will be in the recollection of onr readers that some short time ago the inhabitants of the Kanieri Riding held public meetings with a view to the formation of a new county. This step Was taken under the idea that the Westland County Council were not apportioning to that riding a fair amount of revenue in the shape of public works. A petition was framed for presentation to Parliament, which was numerously signed, and forwarded. Subsequently, owing mainly t<s the influence of the Press in Hokitika, a counter petition was also forwarded to Wellington, showing that the original petition for a new county was nob in accordance with the wishes of twothi:ds of the inhabitants of that riding. During the late exciting struggle between the two parties in the House, the appeal to the country and the ultimate result now developed, the fate of the' petitions of our Kaneri friends has been a matter for the time being of insignificance (tompared with the more vital question at issue. Now, however, we learn by telegram from our special correspondent that the Public Petitions Committee yesterdav ♦brew out the petition agaiiist the formation of the Kaneri Riding into a new county, on the grounds that His Excellency the Governor only could deal with the matter. At the’ outset this may appear of very trivial moment to the residents of this and the adjoining townships but should the original petition now take effect and the Kaneri Riding be proclaimed a new county, the matter will present itself in a far ditierent and more unpleasant aspect. At the present we would only point out that the new comity, if formed, conies as a barrier between the Arahura and Hokitika district, and tht- result of this—should the necessity arise— we shall take an early opportunity of explaitring and af the same time directing attention to the onlv remedy in our opinion under the cumstances.
