THE AFGHAN WAR.

Amongst the news by the Suez mail we find the following extract from the Times of India, of July 18, which throws a good -deal of light on the sudden uprising of the' Afghans against their King and conquerors“ For Some time past no caravans from Herat have arrived at Kandahar, and for three weeks in succession the Kandahar agents have reported to Governinert that no news has been received from that important centre of what Lord Salisbury says 1 still remains the kingdom’ of Afghanistan. The absence of news has created considerable anxiety, and this anxity will scarcly bo allayed by the important telegram we printed yesterday from our Candahar correspondent. He tells us that Yako'ob Khan has received a letter from Ayoub Khan, saying, ‘ You should not have made peace with i .the English. They will throw you ovei* as they did your father,' Sliere Ali, whenever they find it conveniant. I will not fight against the Persians, who treated me so well for a long, time past. Anyhow, I hold Herat; not you.’ Ayoub Khan is the present Ameer’s brother, and to understand th«? telegram properly we puist recollect that he left Persia six or seven months ago, with a view of regaining his old position as Governor of Herat. He was' successful in his attempt, Herat has remained in his possession ever since, and it now sOems that he has determined to act against his brother and to be the first to raise the standard of tevolf.” “It is not at all improbable,” adds another c nitemporary, “ that Ayoub Khan has started the revolt. He may have raised, dissaf inf action amongst his soldiers, offered them money,- and preadied Jchard (a peculiar form of religion) again-.t the British Residency. If he has done this, it is h i-d to c nceive what ol jeet he lias in view, as it would involve a renewal of hostilities oif Ms part against the British.”
