GENERAL ASSEMBLY ELECTION.
The election of two members to represent tiie Hokitika District in the
House of created day probably more excitement in this and the adjoining townships than any that has yet taken place on the Coast. The supporter’s of the various candidates from an early hotlr in the morning to the close df'EHe poll* working in the most energ -tic and pressing manner on behalf of their particular favorites. Shortly before five (/clock,' the numbers at the Court House prkling booth, were announced Mr Dnogan heading the poll. Meanvtfhile €he drhwd had been gathing from all direct'ons, assembled in front Ofthe Bucks Head Hotel, where the indefatigable proprietor, a.ctiu g the part of Returning Officer, received the unofficial re in ns from various sources an I announced then! to the eai»cr and expectant crowd. \Yhe!n the Diuman’h Town re .urn came to hand it Was received With unbounded cheering the names, of Seddon and Reid tincUtig fiivor with the -greater majority of those 'present Various Wero the conjGctionS indulged in as to the probabilities of the chances of the respective candidates until the news from Hokitika and Kanieri arriving set all doubt at rest, as it was then 7 clearly seen, even by the most ; anguine porters of either- Messrs Dungah, Barff, or Cuming,- th rt . th«- choice of- the ■people had fallen on Messrsßeid and Seddon, as their representatijr.es,' and that the returns-from the outlying districts could not possible .affect the main result, .'The: greatest good humor and order prevailed through the whole Contest, the day. terminating'with a general faternisatiou and toasting of the’ successful candidates, by the support: es of both sides.
