[special to kumara times.] • Christchurch, August 20. The contest for the Chess Championship commenced last evening. Eight players—Lusk of Auckland, Benbow and Hnliett of Wellington, Palmer of Kumara, and Mowat of Dunedin—could not come. Each player contests two games with every other, at least one game each evening, although he can arrange to play also during the clay. Last night Bray defeated Ash ; Jacobsen defeated Janion ; flunldiam v. Hay, drawn ; Veel v. Newman, deferred.

The police suspect foul play, as this morning they discovered that a pane in the kitchen window was broken, apparently by being fired through with a gun, and’ on the wall opposite 18 shot marks were found. On a table in this room" several stains of blood were seen, and other stains on the floor, and two corners of the table cover were cnt off and removed.
