VICTORIAN SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
The late professional sculling race, which was won by Hearn, of New Zealand, has (says the Argus) aroused the leading professionals into activity. Several matches of more' than passing interest are on the tapis. R. Edwards, the sou of the boat-builder, is anxious to try conclusions with the New Zealander, and has challenged Hearn to row for the championship of ■ this Colony, and for stakes up to £2OO aside. Hearn’s reply is that he has already made an. arrangement to row Messenger. There is no doubt, after this engagement is over, the two will meet. Messenger protests against Edwards rowing for the “ champion-
ship of Victoria,” on the ground that he (Messenger) is the chainpion. The a somewhat doubtful one for ""Messenger to claim, as he was beaten tit the last regatta for professional towers by both,of Mr Edwards’ lads. Messenger claims the title through having won ft.Gouple.ef sculling races last Vinter over-a two-mile course, on Lower Yarm, . It would bo as for the Victorian Rowing Association to put the title of champion of this Colony Xinder proper rules and conditions, It is absurd to KUppose"that men can row for the title for any trifling stake and over any course they may!think proper. Only the other day an. “ intercolonial*’ sculling match was rowed for a few pounds, .-the representative of this Colony being a sculler of very moderate calibre.
