There was. a' larfce Attendance of -peri sons at the Public' ffali last evening, , the fair sex especially ‘being well represented, on the occasion of a presentation to Mr J.’ 0. Dale, whd for-; merly held the office of Postmaster lathis town. ' : . ... The Rev. 'E,. A., Scpttr occupier! the - '• chair, and in opening the proceedings ■ said the purpose for'which they were--assembled was a very pleasing oue r that of presenting a public officer with - a small memento, as a mark- of the esteem, and respect in which he (Mr. Dale) was held by the public generally.. He might say that the subscriptions - for this purpose had been limited, to allow all to contribute, and the gift , was one of no particular body or soci- . ety, hut a thoroughly' general one, to which irrespective of creed or class, had subscribed. He would ask hisWorship the Mayor to’ make the presentation. • The Mayor (E. Blake, Esq.) .said he had great pleasure in making the ’ presentation, as Mr Dale, during his term of office here, had been alway courteous and obliging, and had often overstopped his official duties for the public benefit. He considered that the recipient was a steady and industrious young marl, and as such would always do his duty, in whatever position'‘he'fiiight . be placed. He thought that' this'pubTic recognition of a young raab’ir Services r was beneficial, as it acted- as a spur not only to him but to others in, .their future life. He could.-bear testimony : to .the, high estimation in which Mr Dale -was held : by the public* and in presenting him with a handsome , gold watch and .39-. . companying testimonial as w mark of their appreciation and recognition of his obliging disposition while, Postmaster of i,this tpw.Oj he also wished him “ God speed ” and success whomever his future lot might be cast,— Mr Oas. U. Dale, wno on rising ; greeted with great applause, qaid it was, with mingled feelings of pride, pleasure,* and confusion that he, thanked them for the very handsome present. He was afraid , the Mayor had. spoken too highly of his (the speaker’s) past services, but still he coincided with! one remark—that it would be a spur to en- • courage him -in hia life/ He trusted tjiey yrould excuse him from making a Jong speech on,the occasion, but be could assure those, who had so kindly recognised his past services in this marked manner that the old associations he has formed in this town, would only duff with his life.—[Applause.] A vote of thanks to the rev; chairman terminated the ’ proceedings, the recipient, however, remaining in the Hall, receiving the congratulations of his numerous friends.
