The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 1879.

There are two passengers and a medium mail for Kumara by the Christchurch coach which passed the Bealey early this morning, and is expected at Goodfellow’s this afternoon at 3 (/clock. It is expected to arrive in town at the usual hour. The Claud Hamilton, for Melbourne, calling at Newcastle (N.S.W.), is to be tendered at Hokitika to-morrow afternoon, at three o’clock. The Local School Committee have resolved to bring into force the compulsory clauses of the Education Act having reference to the instruction of children, a notice to which effect appears in another column. The West Coast Times very humorously suggests that the Westland constituency should advertise in the following strain : 1 Wanted, two gentlemen of liberal view's and decent reputation, to represent Westland in Parliament.” In the matter of advertising, we heartily coincide with our contemporary, but consider the subject matter of the advertisement might be amended by adding the following w'ords after Parliament: “Nephews or babies in receipt of good incomes preferable ; although application from the proprietor of a subsidised Government organ would be entertained.—Elections conducted on the most economical and vacillating principles.—Apply West Coast Times, Hokitika; or New Zealander, Wellington.” The “ own correspondent of the West Coast Times at Wellington telegraphs that Mr Peter Dungan, of this town, is mentioned as a probable candidate for Parlia'mcntary honours. The public meeting to be held at Greymouth this evening to consider the advisability of requesting the Government to make a deviation in the Hokitika and Greymouth Railway line will doubtless be largely attended. A number of the leading citizens of this town, with his Worship the Mayor, left by tram this afternoon to

in a witness-box at Hay, Victoria. The clerk of the bench inquired of him how he was usually sworn. The witness, who was evidently of an accomodating disposition glibly replied, “Ah ! kiss him book—kill him cock—blow him match—s'help me Bob—all along the same !” The sale of slaves in Morocco, writes a correspondent from Tangier, is increasing, and tne fact is doubtless owing to the present situation of the empire. Many Moors are in difficulties; the retainers whom they have to support cost them dear ; and, naturally, they seek to get rid of them. During the past fortnight over 30 negroes of all ages and both sexes were put up to auction. As inyaribly happens, the children, and more particularly the young girls, bring the highest prices. There is a vast difference, however, in the present value of slaves from that of former times, negroes who were formerly sold for 1000 francs or 1200 francs, do not find purchasers now at more than 400 francs, whilst some have been sold for so low a sum as 80 francs, not useless beings, but well-built strong fellows, who can do no small amount of useful work.
