CHESS MATCH, THE LEAD KUMARA.
Another of those friendly contests amongst the chessplayers of this neighbourhood took place on Priday and Saturday evenings last. There have been four matches played in Kumira within the last eighteen months. The first two were between twenty-four players chosen alternately by Messrs- C. Janion and W. C. Palmer, twelve on each side. In the first match, the score was—Jauion’s side, 7 ; Palmer’s, 4 ; drawn game, 1. In the return match between the same teams, Janion’s side also won, the scores being 8 to 4. The third match was between six players of Kumara and six of The Lead ; this resulted in a draw, each side winning three games. The present match was between the same parties, the number ot men on each side being increased to twelve—and it is doubtful if 24 of any other community or provincial district of New Zealand could be got together of the same combined strength, or collectively so strong. The result of this match was a decided victory for The Lead, whose players vanquished eight of their opponents, whilst Kumara defeated only four. It will be observed that three out of the four best players of The Lead were unfortunate, otherwise the defeat of Kumara would have been even more decisive. The following are the scores of the match : The Lead. Won. Kumara. Won. Ballantyne... 0 v. Petrie 1 Hansen ... 1 Pearson 0 Schlichting.. 1 Wylde ... 0 Ball 0 Scott 1 Nicholaison.. 1 Horneman... 0 Bent 1 Wiesner ...
