We loam by telegram from the Hokitika agent that the Claud Hamilton will leave that port for Melbourne direct at daylight to-morrow morning. The annual meeting of the subscribers of the Kumara Literary Institue will be held this evening at 8 o’clock. Wo are requested to state that the Committee will meet half-an-hour prior to the general meeting taking place.
The adjourned meeting of the Local School Committee will be held at the Town Hall this evening.
An accident, fortuately unattended with serious results occurred to a miner returning to Westbrook early this morning. Not perceiving the curve where the Main Pv-oad intersects the Zigzag, he walked straight on, and consequently was immediately precipitated to the bottom of the gully. When taken up by his friends it was found that beyond a few bruises he he vas not the worse for his extraordinary though unintentional leap in the dark.
The auditors’ report and balance-sheet of flic Kuniara Hospital accounts which appears in another column should merit especial attention at the hands of subscribers to tint institution, as the general inmi.-d meeting will take place to-morrow evening, win o nominations will |>c re-
ceived fiiv the new Committee of Management for the ensuing year.
It may not be generally known here that hitherto the English Government have declined to allow Volunteer corps to be formed in Ireland. Wo learn by the last mail that the Government have agreed to accept the principle that the Volunteer system (with certain safeguards not yet announce- 7 ) bo extended to Ireland, and a Bill on the subject introduced by the Chevalier O’Clary was road a second time. Flannel nosebag, as respirators for the prevention of hor,seasickness, are to be issued fur the cavalry horses lately arrived in Natal from England. This will be in addition to the regulation feeding-bag. The ilaunel respirator is usually considered a most efficacious preventive, but it is comforting to know that the season for horse-sickness is now rapidly drawing towards its conclusion.
Mount Etna is in a state of eruption. No less than 30 new craters have been opened on one side of the mountain. The eruption has caused the desertion of the surrounding villages, and there is much destitution in the neighbourhood.
