A TEXAN DESPERADO.

Public opinion in Texas, says one of the American papers, “ st.curly disapproves” of the shooting of Mr Benjamin Porter, an actor, by a man named Currie, at Marshall, in that State recently. This disapproval of Currie’s conduct is certainly justifiable, for the “ tragedy,” it is stared, is one of the most revolting that has ever been enacted in Texas ” Mr Porter was one of a troupe of actors who have been performing “ Diplomacy” in

various towns in the United States. They had been giving a performance at the Opera Hall at Marshall, and when it was concluded three of them—Mr Porter, Mr Bairymore, and Miss Baker—went into a restaurant to have supper, before leaving Marshall by an early train in the morning. Whi’e there, a man known as “Jim Currie” entered, and made some offensive remarks respecting Miss Baker, which led to a remonstrance fiom Messrs. Porter and B irrymore. Currie, remarking that “ he did not like to be spoken to in that way,” drew two repeating pistols, and began a murderous tire upon the |uriy. Miss Baker escaped, bat fir Porter was killed ; and Mi- Barrymore, at whom Currie fired no fewer than five shot--, was seriously wounded. Came is now- in prison, and f int hopes aie enu-i fainc-1 that he will actually bo hanged for t;.is unprovoked and atrocious murder ; for the people at Marshall are said to be very, indignant, and fears are eutenaine';! ihat the incident will hint the State.”
