CHESS.

THE . INTERCOLONIAL MATCH.— N. S. WALES V. VICTORIA. It will be remembered that no match was played last year, as the players of New South Wales, who had suffered a long series of defeats were unable to get together a team strong enough to warrant any reasonable hope of success, However, they bided their time, the Argus says, and having gone in for a long coarse of steady practice, and assembled a good team, they again threw* down the gauntlet resolved to make one effort more. It is a long lane that has rio turning, and the players of New Sonth Wales have at length succeeded in turning the tables on their former conquerors, and have gained a welldeserved victory. The players assembled at the respective telegraph offices, Melbourne and Sydney, about 10 o’clock on Saturday morning, tbe 24th May. The representative of Victoria at Sydney having won the toss, Victoria became entitled to the first move at boards 1,3, 5, and 7. The players when then paired by lob with the following result: — N. S. Wales, Won. Victoria. Won, Chaitlier . . 1 v. Stanley . , 0 Ryan . . .dr Burns. . . df Russell . , dr L, S. Phillips dr Fisher .1 Hamel . . 0 Smith, . . dr Stephen , . dT Crane, . , 1 Sedggeld, , 0 Ott , . , 0 L, Goldsmith 1 New Sonth Wales, therefore, won the match by 2 games, the score being—* New South Wales, ,3q Victoria, 1 j drawn, 3. We observe that Herr Ott, of Vienna, who lately passed through New Zealand became pitted against Victoria’s champion, Mr L. Goldsmith, the latter t! scoring a hard-earned win.” Herr Ott was defeated two games out of three in a match with Mr I). R. Hay, of Dunedin, a few weeks ago, and as Mr Hay, now regarded as the champion of Otago, has been defeated in matches with several other players of this colony, it may be inferred that the chess skill of New Zealand will compare favourably with that of the sister colonies.

Secretary Chess Congress Committee, we are in j formed that the tournament for the championship of New Zealand has been postponed from the sth to the 19th August.
