WESTLAND EDUCATION
Meetings of the Board were held on Thursday and Friday last, in Hokitika. From the report of the proceedings which appears in the West Coast Times we extract the following business transacted in connection with this district:— Letters were received From the Secretary Kamara Committee, recommending the appointment of Mr Thus. M. Wilson to be head teacher, and of Miss May Brown to be assistant teacher, at the Kumara Public School. Resolved, “ That in accordance with the recommendation of the committee; the following teachers be appointed to the Kumara School:—Mr - Thos. M. Wilson to be head teacher, at a salary of £260 per annum j Miss-May Brown to be assistant teacher, at a salary of £IOO per annum, subject to the schedule of capitation allowance.” ■ ■ Prom the Secretary‘Kamara Committee, recommending-' the' temporary appointment of Mr J. T. Hackett as assistant teacher in 1 the Kumara School. Res d ved, “ That Mr' J. ackett be temporarily appototed'fttibswtaut teacher in the Kumara SoHSfel, at a salary of £l5O |.«r (sflliject to schedule of - as recommended By the cethrfiifcbre/’ From Mr J. M. Wilson, Head teacher, Kumara • school,-- asking for payment of salary -from . date of appointment. - - Resolved, “That Mr Wilson be paid salary from the date of his landing in Hokitika; aithe rate Of £3OO per annum/’ ; . v From the Head Teacher, Kumara school, calling the attention of the Board to the insufficiency of the present stall at the school. .. From the Secretary Kumapi Committee aaking the Board to reconsider their decision, with reference to the salary payable to the temporary assistant female teacher. ' ’ .. Also re payment to the pupil teacher, for extra work,. ’ ' ' Resolved,(*, That Mias Gafland receive the sum agreed to by the comimtte, viz. £2 per week.” The question of payment tothfe pupil teacher, was deferred, uufll the arrival of the newly appointed'teachers. From the Kumara Committee, recommending the appointment of Mr Bussell to. I. the ‘ Greenstone School undgt:'&e' ’of the Act. ’ • v v; * ; Resolved, ** That Mr Btifteel be appointed teacher at the Greer stone School in accordance With the recommendation of the committee, and that salary be paid to him at the rate of £3 15s per head of average attendance under Government regulations.” From the. Kumara Committee requesting that; lamps may- be provided for the Kum&tU School. Received. From the- same recommending the appointment Of-Robert Wylde as pupil teacher in the Kumara School. Resolved, “ That-Robert Wylde and Mary Jane Howe : he appointed temporary pupil teachers at the’ Kumara School without salary, until the arrival of the assistant teachers l appointed to the Kamara School/’ : ’ -L/' From the -Kumara Committee, objecting to pay for certain'school requi. sites supplied to the Kumara School. Mr Seddon, on behalf of the committee, withdrew theUbjection. From the teacher, Greenstone School, with .reference to some furniture belonging to the late teacher. Resolved, “That the Chairman of tlie Kumara Committee be empowered to treat with Mr O'*Neil, for the purchase of the school furniture belonging to him, in the Greenstone School, for a sum not exceeding -£2. n From the Secretary, Kumara Committee, recommending -the Board to purchase a. pertain building at Wesbrook, for school purposes. Resolved, “ That the question of purchasing the buildirig at’ Westbrook, be referred to the Building > l^Ma^mittee ( with power to act.-* ... -rr From the same,.with.reference to the removal of a hut upon'the school reserve at Kumara. . Resolved, *.* That' the sum, of £5 be paid to Mr Lennox, cn removal of his hut from the school .reserve at Kumara.”

Resolved, w Thaf the Chairman of the Kumara Committee he empowered to have a wicket gate placed at the rear of the Knmara School Reserve, to prevent traffic through the School grounds.
