GREAT FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
The following further particulars of the great fire at Wellington, received after the pulication of last evening’s Kumara Times, were issued as an “ Extra ” later in the evening;— [press agency.] Wellington, June 16. Lust night’s file swept over teu acies of ground, destroying about thirty buildings. The complete and correct list of the insurances are as follow : South British, £3400 ; Transatlantic, £3OOO ; Standard, £2500 ; New Zealand, £2500; Union, £2500; Northern, £1500; National, £1450; Colonial, £I4OO ; Victoria, £ISOO ; North British, £I2OO ; Hanseatic, £1100; Royal, £9OO ; London and Lancashire, £900; Imperial, £SOO ; Magdenburg, £SOO ; Guardian, £3OO ; Sun, £175 ; Manchester, £150; Norwich Union, £l5O. The Liverpool and London and Globe, and United insurance companies have no risk. The insurance agents meet this afternoon. When the strong room of the Bank of New Zealand was opened this morning, the walls were found to be blackened with smoke, but all the contents were uninjured. Among the contents were all the papers connected with the late Mr Rhodes’ estate. The buildings destroyed were :—The Opera House, Engleman’s Fancy Bazaar, Eddie and Jacks’ (bottlers), Working Men’s Club, Stratford’s Corn Store, Branch Bank of New Zealand, Warcup (bootmaker), Smart’s oyster shop, Hogarth’s timber yard, Graves and Fleming’s (drapers’) shop, Elders’ fruit shop, Rickman’s boot shop, Wesleyan Church and School, Simon’s (tailor’s), Young’s oyster shop, Brown’s (cabinetmaker’s), Nag’s Head Hotel and stables, Emeny’s Royal Oak Hotel, Market Hall, Williams and Cameron’s (saddlers’), Ashton’s boot shop, and a Jot of outbuildings. A good deal of damage was also done at Te Aro (drapery) house.
The report of a man being burned at the fire was a mistake. [NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] The fire is believed to have originated by the iron feed-pipe to the sunlight of the theatre getting heated and igniting some of the woodwork of the roof. The sunlight had been burning from 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturday as there was an afternoon performance.
