Mr Charles Pierson was to-day duly declared by the Returning Officer a member of the Borough Council of Kumara, as Mr R. Brown, who had also been nominated for the vacancy, retired in accordance with the fornis prescribed by the " Regulation of. Local Elections Act, 1876."
One of the most important works in the district, the new bridge over the Teremakau river, is rapidly approaching completion, and in fact the two counties may be said to have been joined yesterday when by permission of the contractor, one or two persons walked across the bridge from the -. Westland into the Grey County. Should the. present favourable weather continue; the approaches on this side of thedriver' will shortly be finished, as a large slip of - earth and debris that occured at Hayes Terrace sometime ago will now be utilized in making the embankment by means of trucks and a tramway laid down on the bridge. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr Barff, J.P., Mary Clements was fined 10s and costs, for drunkenness. A sum of 2s was also allowed by the Bench for hire of a vehicle for the conveyance of prisoner, who was found by Constable Nash in a state of helpless drunkenness near the cutting on l^^^^^oad^^^^'* The election of a vacancy caused by Taiaroa accepting a seat in the Legislative Council, will take place before the end of the present month. The constituency extends over the whole of the Middle Island, and it is satisfactory to know that Westland will furnish a candidate. Tainui, of Arahura intends to contest the seat, and it is reported, on what is believed to be the best authority, that he has by far the best chance of the three who will probably be nominated. It is stated that there are but 258 votes, and Tainui is believed to be promised a trifle over one half of the total. The election will be held at Kaiapoi; and Patahaha, who held the seat from 1868 1870 inclusive will stand but we are informed is not likely to get much support outside Kaiapoi. Taiaroa's influence will, it is said, be exercised for the Westland candidate, Tainui. The desire to erect the Kanieri district into a seperate county, seems to be abating somewhat, and the enthusiaism of those who projected the scheme is dying away rapidly, as the fact stares them in the face that great numbers of those who signed the original petition have changed their views, and are now violently opposed to the dismemberment of the diitrict. Thj matter will be finally
decided soon after the meeting of Parlia L ment. A meeting of the Republican Association of Italy, called by Garibaldi, resolved to agitates for universal suffage and for the abolition of the deputies' oath of alliagence. The subscription opened for the purchase of 1000,000 rifles to arm the nation with resulted in a failure. Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Up john (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c, in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Advt.
