THE RECENT EVENTS IN AFGHANISTAN.
IMPORTANT ENGAGEMENT NEAE JEZ.IA--IABAD. On April 2, an important engagement took place three miles beyond Futtehabad by the column under General Gough against the Ehugianis, 5000 of whom were on the field: On our side there were part of the Second Brigade, the 17th Foot, the 26th and 45th Native Infantry, and four guns of the 1 C Battery. The enemy were enticed out of their position and brilliantly charged by the 10th Hussars and the Guides Cavalry. The Ehugianis fled, pursued by our cavalry. Major Battye and Lieutenant Wiseman were killed. Further and later particulars regarding the skirmish state that the action was a spirited one, the Guides especially distinguishing themselves. It appears that the Ehugianis openly manifested their hostility by firing on General Gough’s reconnoitring parties. That officer immediately got his brigade under arms, and, on his pickets falling back, advanced against the enemy, who held a strong position about two miles from camp. On the guns opening fire, the 'Ehugianis advanced with much determination, and it was found necessary to order Major the Hon. A. Stewart’s battery of Horse Artillery to retire. The infantry were now brought up, and, the enemy showing signs of hesitation, General Gough seized the opportunity by hurling the three squadrons of Guides on the shaken foe. The result was the utter defeat of the enemy, who fled, leaving 400 dead on the field, our own loss being six killed and 31 wounded. Among the former, however, were two British officers—Lientenent N. O. Wiseman, a talented and most promising officer, the interpreter of the 17th Foot, and Major Wigram Battye commanding the cavalry of the Corps of Guides.
