Mr Barff, M.H.R., addressed a large number of his constituents at the TheatreRoyal last evening, and received-a unanimous vote of confidence. Owing to the length of the honorable members address, we are compelled to hold it over until Monday's issue.
Two nominations were received by the Returning Officer to-day for.the vacant seat in the Borough Councils-Mr Charles Pierson, nominated by Messrs Blake and Hanna ; and Mr Robert Brown, nominated by Messrs Galland and 'Fitzsimmons. The election will take place on the 18th instant.
We learn that the Government have approved of the decision arrived at by the Commissioners in the case of Armstrong and party, and will place the sum of £lB7 on the Estimates in accordance therewith.
The friends of Mr John Lazar, of Hokitika (and they are innumerable), will deeply regret to learn that he is sinking fast, and that at early hour this morning he was unconscious, although previously he had been visited by and conversed with several of his chief friends and brothers. Mr Lazar has now attained his 78th year. In accordance with an advertisement requesting those willing to assist in organising an entertainment in aid of the Hospital funds, a number of persons met at Gilbert Stewart's Hotel last evening, ;and voluntarily tendered their services towards assisting in that most laudable object.
In consequence of the Hospital Committee receiving within the last few days so many applications for annual tickets, they have decided to postpone' the publication of the list of subscribers until the last clay of the present month, so as to enable the Secretary to furnish us with all the names up to that date.
The chess match by correspondence, three games simultaneously, between Dr. Giles, of Hokitika, and Mr C. Janion, of Kumara, Avhich commenced early in December last, has just terminated, Mr Janion winning all three games. The first and second games have already appeared in this journal, and we hope to present our chess readers with the third in an earlv issue.
To persons requiring some good freehold land, partly cleared, and situated in a favorable position for gardening purposes, an opportunity is now offered for purchasing or leasing 30 acres on Sandy's Hill, the inspection of which, and terms, can be obtained on application to Mr W. Nicholson, Main street.
The drawing of Lee Brothers' billiard sweep will positively take place at Ryan's billiard room, Dillman's Town, on Monday evening next, by a committee chosen from the subscribers present. We are requested to state that any ticket not paid for before the hour of drawing, the number thereof will not be recognised.
