The following is a summary of Australian news from May 1 to May 6> brought by the s.ft Albion 5 VICTORIA, The success of the New South Wales loan has produced a deep impression^ The Victorian is regarded as a comparative failure in commercial circled. The Supreme Court ruled that a purchaser under a writ of fi fa could obtain a title. The Minister of Lands has introduced a new condition in leases to defeat this, but it is believed to be illegal. Government propose to build a reformatory station on a small island in Western Bay* Italian artists of repute are exhibit* ing pictures in Melbourne with a view to selling them. Glen Iffer, a splendid Clydesdale entire, imported in the Nortbumber* land, died the night after its arrival on the steamer. Victoria exhibits largely at Sydney. Over two hundred applications for space have already been received. Some Victorian exhibits at Paris are now being shipped in the Nelson for Sydney. NEW SOUTH WALES. The quarter-million loan has been floated, and the highest price obtained at 4 per cent, of any Australian stock. It is 1 per cent, better than the rate: obtained for tf& higher-priced Victorian loan. Tenders ranged.from 99J to 97. Interest commences on July 1 t. The first cable tank constructed in Australia is completed. It is intended for a spare New Zealand cable. Rosa Robins, a girl 19 years of age, has been arrested for bigamy. The Temprance Hotel at Albany waa burned, and .many of the inmates narrowly escaped with their life. Messrs Ivess and Campbell have been elected Directors of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. The new municipal assessment ,of Sydney has- commenced. It tended to tax Government property within the citv. ;...v. The bank of New SoothtWWes has declared a dividend of 15 pet* Cjent and ; a bonus of 2£ per cent. . ?-....?,,.-,,., r . The London Committee have; applied -for 56,000 square feet of -floor space at the exhibition, 29,000 feet of wall sgac*, and 38,000 feet of ground space. The stock trade is depressed, owing to the depressed state of the ffieat preserving companies. * '^"•••" l TASMANIA. The Council are almost certain to reject; the Income Tax. Gold has been discovered at Wisloca, 30 miles eaast of Launcestou. Upwards of £316,000 worth of tin was exported last year, and £59,000 worth of gold.
