An inquest was held yesterday afternoon on the body of Daniel Breen, who fell from a high load of straw at Alford. He was brought to the Christchurch I ospital, but never rallied, and died last Satmday morning. The jurv returned a verdict of accidental death. Dr Chilton endeavored to protest against the inquest being held outside the Hospital, but was silenced by the Coroner.
Wellington. May 5. In consequence of financial difficulties Mr Dranstield lias resigned his position as Mayor.
Mr James Mackay authorises a denial of a statement in a country paper that he received £ISOO for reporting on the Waiinate question. He is not in the service of tdovernment, and went to Parih.-ika without any stipulation as to payment.
Wanganui, May 5. Just after cm* o’clock to-day the mn'titahular boiler used at Duncan and York s Sash an 1 D >or Factory exploded " a fearful f-»roe, killing the engineer, J. Nixon, and wounding several ptrsons who were in ciose proximity. A num-
ber of men employed in the yard, on rushing to the spot, found a terrible picture before their eyes. The unfortunate engineer was found across a pile of timber, horribly mangled, one side of his head being torn away ; a Maori, standing near to the bouse, was cut and badly scalded about the head, the escape of others being miraculous. The victom of this sad event, John Nixon, is married, with a family living in Nixon street. Nixon bad paid the renewal premium on his jiolicy for insurance tins very day, having called at Taylor and Watt’s office duinrg the dinner hour, lie had not long returned before the accident happened. He was seen oiling tin.* engine a few minutes before the explosion caused his death. There are Various conjectures as to the cause of the accident.

A fire broke out on Sunday morning, about five o’clock, in a grocery store situated irr Kings street,, north, owned and occupied by Miss Catherine Miller. The damage only amounted to £lO.
