New Plymouth, May 6. At the Supreme Court this morning, Cringall pleaded guilty to killing his half-brother Ferdinand Paul, at Norman by on the 16th January last, and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labour.
Wellington, May 6. Two brothers named Maxted were brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning for not contributing towards the support of their aged lather and mother. Evidence showed that one of the brothers owned 200 acres of land and 20 bead of stock, the other about 70 acres and a lot of stock, and that lor years they had not contributed in the slightest degree towards their parents’ support, or even inquired as to how they managed to exist. The Magistrate said it was the first case of the kind he ever heard in the colony, and he hoped it would be the last. Ir. was a disgrace to the colony to see men in the position of these Maxteds allowing a crippled father and decrepid rao* ther to be neglected, and ordered each to pay 7s 6d per week towards the maintenance of their parents. One brother said, “ I cannot pay ; I have not the means.” The Magistrate replied, “It is no use your saying that; the law is more powerful than you, and will find a way to compel you.” Information is to be laid again-t another brother not yet summoned. John llosenbeny, for being illegally on premises at Kaitoke, was sentenced to three months’ hard labour. To all appearances the man was demented. It appears that Walter’s, who was a partner with Gleich, front Adelaide, absconded, and is now doing a term of imprisonment at Pern ridge. The Chief Justice to-day refused to consider an application by a bankrupt for sustenance out of his estate, until the question had been taken before his creditors for their c msideration.
Councillor Hunter i.s expected to be chosen as temporary Mayor, until a new one is elected.
The establishment of a new Public Library will be considered ou Monday next.
The sittings of the Court of Appeal commence on Monday next. There are only three ca-es : one from Auckland, and two from Wellington. The Hinemoa left at four o’clock this afternoon, to bring back his Excellency the Governor. After leaving Lyttelton, the Hinemoa will convey Sir Hercules Robinson and party to Akaroa, where a few hours will be spent ou Thursday. The steamer will then come on to Wellington direct, arriving here on Friday.
Timaru, May 7. Thomas Keenan was fine] to-day by the Resident Magistrate for sly grogselling. It is expected that a criminal prosecution will result from the case. The Magistrate said the evidence of Keenan and his wife was so contradictory that it was not worth anything. Christchurch, May 6. The Belfast meat factory was destroyed by hie this evening. Total insurances; New Zealand, £200; South British, £1000; Transatlantic, £IOO ; National, £O6O ; other offices, £IOOO. The Colonial office declined to reinsure.
