CiiuisTCHUiicH, May 2. At the meeting of the board of Education, yesterday, a discu-ion aroseirelativeto the. sale Of school bo'ks. Amemo from the head master of the East Chi itchurch Schod WaS Mead, pointing out that neither he nor his colleegues had any pecuniary interest in the sale of the hooks, and that the pre-ure put upon the children was only a desire to see them provided with school requidites, and pointing out that, as louu as the advancement of pupils is studied, the item of books would always have to be faced and would always be grumbled at. The letter was received. In the matter of a deaf and dumb institution, it was said that Messrs Inglis and Montgomery were .going to initiate the affair, Mr Webb stated that it had b°en advised to see the Governor on his arrival to know if he would become patron of the institution. The Government proposed to git e £ fcr £ for every one collected, and £65 per year in the tirst instance. The Government had sent to England for an instructor.
It is believed by Dr Hector, who has tested the material, that cumeiit can he manufactured from the dredgings cf the Lyttelton harbor. A quantity of material has been sent for experimentalising, and should the result prove satisfactory, it is likely a new industry may spring up.

Dunkdin, May 1. The Customs revenue collected at the port of Dunedin for the Month of April amounted to L 35,560 16s.
It is probable that the Kaitangata Relief Fund will reach close on L 15,000. A boy named Scanlon son of Mr Scanlon, of the Rose, Thistle, and Shamrock Hotel, had his skull fractured by being thiownfiom a horse he was taken to water. He is expected to recover.
Mr Alexander Findlater Blood, of the Kings Inns, Dublin, barrister-at-law was to-day admitted and enrolled as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by the Hon. Justice Williams.
The residence of Mr Gray, at Btoad Bay, was burned to the ground on Tuesday list. Mr and Mrs Gray are in the ha' «it of living in town from Monday morning until Saturday night, and when the fire -tartled there was only a female domestic in the house. The girl states that shortly before the fire took place she was hauging up some articles of clothing in a wardrobe room, and she thinks some article of clothing musfcha v e cau«ht fire unobserved Wy her. The furrifure was insured in the National tor £2OO. TheClutha train was delayed for half an hour this moraing through a truck taking fire.
May 2. The boy James Scanlon, who was injured yesterday by the fall from a horse in Clyde street, died at his father's house at 11 o'clock this morning,
