ARAHURA ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of the Arahura Road Board, was held at the Town Hall last evening. Present: Mr R. J. Seddon (in the chair), Messrs Lawliss, Hedged and the Secretary to the Board (Mr Bryne). The minutes ot the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following Report of the Com* mittee appointed to enquire into the accounts of the late rate collector was read, received, and adopted ; “ The Committee appointed to inquire into the accounts of Mr Thomas Queale, late collector of rates, have the honor to report that we have carefully examined said accounts aild vouchers, and find that the sum of £lO, marked for ‘ expenses,’ should not have been detained without the sanction ot the Board* The aUms of £ls, charged for ‘ valuing,’ £ls for ‘ cheque No. 7t,* and £ll ss, for ‘lnspector Nuisances,* should, in the opinion of this Commit* tee, have also been passed by the Board. Tims the sum of £55 5s had not been properly, accounted for, inasmuch as the said amoftnt should have b ien paid into the Board’s account, as provided by law. We therefore, re* commend that legal opinion be obtained as to the proper course to be pursued in the matter.”

It was then resolved “That the present rate collector receive 15 petf cent on the collection of the ballance of the rates to the amount of ,£35 ; with a bonus of £5 when the amount stated is collected, and for any further amount over that sum he may Collect, he be allowed 25 per cent.” On the motion of Mr Sedddh, seconded by Mr Lawliss-, it was resolved : “ That the Chairman inform the ratepayers, by advertisement, who paid rates to Mr J. M’Donell, that the liability to refund same is admitted by the Board, and that they will repay the amount as soon as possible.” Accounts to the amount of £lB 7s 6d were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned.
