Gentlemen—Your honorable Council having requested me to interview the Government on several matters important to the Borough, and not clashing with the interests of the Westland County Council, but to a certain extent being beneficial to both bodies, I. have the honor to report as follows 1. Land Sale within Borough.— Gov eminent cannot interfere, as the law provides where proceeds of land sales are to go. At same time, any sp. cial claim would receive their earnest consideration. 2. Kumara Educational Reserve. Dr Giles does not recommend lifting the Reserve, but advises Government to put same under control of Warden, as on goldfields. Government purpose bringing in bill next session, dealing with the question, and would favour power being given to Commissioners to sell business sites, Attorney-General promised to s< ud copy nf till, when printed, to Borough Council and Re-
serve Committee ; and any suggestions would receive the earnest consideration of Government. I would advise resolution being passed strongly urging Government to insert clahse allowing sales of section now occupied on leases. 3, Waimea Race, and Ttii and Fourth Streets. —lnstructions were promised to be given to Race manage? to cover race in Tui street. On this question, the Government have had long correspondence with District Engineer and Race Manager, and on perusal of same I have no hesitation in, saying that copies of the said correspondence should have been laid before the Council, seeing there are always two sides to any question^ 4. The Award re Arahura Road Board. —Government paid the'subsidy to the original body, and if Borough Council entitled to same, proceedings should be instituted for recovery of same.
