Betting : 4 to 1 against Longlands, Camballo, Natator, and Mata ; 6 to 1 against Titnnia and Foul Play, 7 to 1 against Chancellor, 8 to 1 aginst Templeton and Vampire, and 10 to 1 against Laertes. There was but a moderate start for this race, |Na tutor and Longlands not getting away with the leader. Camballo got well to the front at once, and cut out the running at a great pace, Vampire and Mata coming close behind. Mata stuck well to Camballo all up the straight, and for a long way the two raced neck and neck, Vampire coming third, Natator being absolutely last all up the straight. About 200 yards before entering the straight Longlauds had gone, up to Mata, and Camballo began to fall back. Coming down the run home Mata and Longlands were sailing away with a lead of several lengths ahead of everything ; and aftei the distance post was passed, Clifford seeing that Longlands was safe to win, eased off Mata. Natator came through his horses with a great rush after the half-mile post was passed, and was ridden every yard of the way home to catch Longlands, who beat him by the post by a length ; Mata was third and Vampire came fourth. Time—2min 43|secs.
