[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, April 14, Crowds of people assembled to witness a baloon ascent to-day. When at a great height the balloon collapsed, but the aeronaught miracously escaped uninjured.
April 15. Arrived ; the Arawata. The Adelaide Cup was won by Banker, Jarto second, and Timothy third. The departure of the John Elder has been postponed, owing to a mishap with the machinery.
April 16. Mauritius advices to 31st March report the engagement during the month of 500 tons for Dunedin, and 300 tons for Lyttelton. The Turco, with cargo for both ports, has put back .damaged. Sydney, April 16. Ant imn Stakes—Petrea, 1; LeLoup, 2; Braid wood, 3. Good race. Won by half a length. Time, 2mins. 16seq. Sydney'Cup—Savanaka, 1 ; Chester 2 ; Bosworth, 3. Splendid race. Won by half a length. Time, 3mins. 33secs.
Lieutenant Governor Sir Alfred Stephen, Colonels Scratchlyand Anderson, inspected the Volunteer camp toJ day, A parade took place and successful experiments were made with the tor pedo vessel.
