The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 1879.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council will be held at the Town Hall this evening. Our report of the proceedings at the Resident Magistrate’s Court is unavoidably held over until to-morrow. One of the witnesses in another “fowl deed case ” that was heard at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning made a most atrocious, though unknowing pun, in giving his evidence, as, when asked if all his fowls were mai’ked, he answered “Yes, with the exception of one lobsided, reddy black, long-legged rooster, which he had not “ Gortonised,” as it was such a re-mark-able fowl. This, however, was considered hardly sufficient peculiarality by one of his neighbours, who, to add to the already grotesque appearance of the bird in question, had decapitated it, in which state it was produced in Court. In another column will be found the result of the drawing on Cuokson’s Great Sweep on the Autumn Handicap. We

learn that the three fortunate individuals who drew horses in Cameron’s Dunedin Sweep will nett about £lO5 each, as their horses were all starters.

Unslacked lime ocmpressed into oartriges, or used loosely and well tamped down in the hole, usingwateror other liquid to saturate and expand it, is now proposed for use in fiery coal mines. It is claimed that the advantages to be derived from its use are economy in the production of coal; making less slack than by using ordinary blasting powder ; lives of colliers are in less danger ; the breaking or shattering of coal back of the charge—whichjis especially characteristic of the use of gunpowder—is avoided! and the quality of the atmosphere, is rather improved by its use then other wise.
