HOKITIKA AND GREYMOUTH RAILWAY.
The members of this district in the Westland Cdiinty Council are to be commended for the persevering interest they take in matters that are considered by the public to be fcfr the good of the district generally. At the last sitting of the Council Mr' Seddon; by leave, moved, " That with the view of proving to tlio Government the practicability of a railway route by detour between the Arahura aud Teremakatt riverti connecting Goldsborough, Stafford* and Kumara, with the Hokitiksi and Greymouth railway, this Council defray two-thirds of the cost of the survey labor in making flying survey with the view of laying plans before Parliament at its next sitting. The Borough Council of Kumara to find engineering services and the remaining third o£ the cost of the survey." Mr Seddon proceeded at some length to contend that) the engineering difficulties reportetTto exist as against this deviation* ' were purely man who travelled to Kumars of .£SO" would enable to lay such plans on the the House of Ilepresentatives as would convince Parliament that the supposed engineering difficulties were not id e'xiste'nde. He ventured to say that a iilie along the beach would be most foolish expenditure, and would never pay working expenses.Mr Handle seconded, and supported the argumeut of Mr Seddon. The alleged engineering difficulties hitd no existence iu fact, and Parliament ought to be made aware of the trite state of the fact.
Mi Dale as an amendment, moved that the Council wait on Mr O'Connor, before taking any ac ; ion, with a view of learning what the supposed engineering difficulties were. This amendment was seconded by Mr Jack and carried.
