Christchurch, April 15 ; AS far as at present ascertained, the insurances on the fire last night ave— New Zealand, £1000; Sun, £1000; South British, £2OOO ; Union, £2000; Standard, £2000: National, £2000; United, £SOO ; Transatlantic, £IOOO j total, £11,500. This is irrespective of the building itself, which is the property of Mr Wilson, of Wilson, Sawtell, nnd Co., and which is insured for £IOOO. The Fire Brigade worked splendidly.
Wellington, Apiil 15. A yacht with three men in, M'Callum (compositor), Arthur Dixon, and Marriott, has been missing since three o'clock yesterday, when they started from Island Bay to come home. It is supposed eithpr they foundered on some rocks on the coast, or that they were swept out to sea.
The Stadt Hiarlem is expected here on Thursday; tn discharge immigrants and curgo for this port. She will go hack to Lyttelton to load for Home. It is said that lots of Maoris are working otl the railway works between Wainiea and ITaweaj on confiscated territory*
Wm. Harris has been charged with neglecting his wife. It was found in the course of the case that he had been in the habit of illtreating his wife while in delicate health. The magistrate caused an informal ion to be laid against him at once, and sentenced him to eight weeks' imprisonment. The employees in Mills' foundry have presented Mr and Mrs Mills each with a handsome present as a mark of their esteem.
April 16. Mr G. S. Cooper, Under-Secretary for the colony, wh'i lias been seriously il! for some time, took a change for the better yesterday.
The three young men and the yacht, reported missing, turned up last night. The yacht was entirely wrecked, and the occupants had a most narrow escape for their lives.
The Mayor has called a public meet ing for considering the establishment of a Free Public Library. A little child was run over this morning by a milk cart, but escaped injury in an extraordinary manner, the wheel having passed over thfe little one's body. The Hinemoa has gone to New Plymouth, it is said for the Native Minister.
Bluff, April 15. John Clark Mackay, a carpenter, was arrested to-day by Constable Coffey, charged with having attempted to commit a rape upon a child named Caroline Cotter, under five years of age. He was remanded till to-morrow. Auckland, April 15. x The Flirt, which has urrived from New Caledonia, reports matters very Unsettled in New Caledonia.
