The adjourned, inquest on the body of the late Mr W. Pitt was held at Greymouth this afternoon, when Mrs Evans, and Messrs Glennie and Kerr, who were present at the time of the fatal accident, were examined as to its occurrence. The jury returned a verdict "That deceased was accidentally drowned while crossing the Aralmra river on March 31st, and that every exertion was used by those on shore to save him."
It is publicly notified in another column that all the Banks in this town will be closed on Good Friday, the day following, and Easter Monday, according to the statutes of New Zealand.
The telegraphic and postal departments were again taken charge of this morning by Mr Furby, who returned from his short but eventful excursion yesterday a better and a happier man. His temporary successor, Mr M'Elwain, left for Reefton to-day, and although here for: a few weeks only, his genial manner and courtesy gained for him many friends amongst the public with whom he was brought in contact in the discharge of his duties as postmaster and telegraphist. In consequence of giving up business Messrs D. Davidson and Co. announce a great clearing sale, at which "greater bargains then ever " maybe obtained.
Mr David M'Kellar, of Tapanui, states the Otago Daily Times, intends shortly to cut up the whole of liis valuable estate, comprising 14, 500 acres, into farms averaging 200 acres each, and leasing them. Plans of the estate are now being lithographed. The estate is Well known to contain some of the richest arable land in New Zealand. As an instance, a crop of 200 acres of oats is estimated to yield over 70 bushels to the acre, and several of the settlers adjoining have paddocks expected to exceed that average. Mr McKellar has had several applications already for leasing. For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Advt.] Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), Uegs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c, in the best style. N.B.— Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Advt.
