LOCAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Local School Committee was held in the Town Hall last evening, Fresent Messrs. Seddon (in the chair), Bain, Birch, Wylde, Campbell, Drummond, and Munyard.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, as also the minutes of a special meeting held on the 23rd of March last.
The outward correspondence was read and approved of, and the inward read, received, and considered seriatim. On a letter from Mr O’Neil tendering his resignation -as master of the Greenstone School being considered, Mr Wykle, as one of the sub-committee who inspected this school,, explained that the resignation of the master was mainly due to the fact that it was carried on under the 88th. clause, and under which he (Mr O’Neil) did nob receive anything like adequate remuneration for his services. The building now in use was in a most dilapidated condition, and the sub committee had at first recommended the purchase of the old office used by the Hohonui Water-Race Company, but on enquiring they found that it was mortgaged three deep. A suitable building had, however, been found in the Bank of New Zealand, which had just closed its Agency there, and which at a small cost cohid be made into a thoroughly suitable school.
The Chairman moved, Mr Munyard .seconded and it was carried unanimously : —“That the resignation of Mr O’Neil be held over until next meeting, and in the meantime the Secretary communicate with the Board and ask them to rescind the resolution bringing the school tinder the 88th clause, and that on the Board finding building and paying salaries, the Committee will endeavor to see that matters are conducted on a satisfactory basis alike to the public and the Board. A building in every way suitable can be obtained for .£BO, building alluded to being the offices lately occupied by the Bank of New Zealand. The total cost of fittings, ifec., would not exceed £50."
