Timaru, April 1. Arthur Goodwyn, a baker who recently became insolvent is to be prosecuted for fraudulent bankruptcy on several counts.
Operations on the breakwater are now in full swing, and another 20ft will be completed by to-morrow. A lower layer of blocks, averaging 25 tons is first put down, and these are capped by one huge solid block built over them. It is believed this arrangement will greatly increase the stability of the work.
A man whose name has not yet been ascertained, was found in the Saltwater Creek to-day.
A petition has been numerously signed against the removal of Mr Campbell, R. M. from Temnka and Geraldine.
April 2. Isiodov Schwartz will be brought up on a charge of arson at the R, M. Court to-morrow. The case is expected to occupy some time.
The pilotage dues collected at Lyttelton last month exceed any previous mouths, being £BOO. Wellington, April 2. The revenue of the third quarter of the financial year which ended on Monday is not yet definitely ascertained, but the returns sent enable an approximate estimate to be formed, from which it appears that notwithstanding loss in revenue from land sales there will be a surplus over the Estimates.
Yesterday the employees of the New Zealander presented Mr F. B. Senior late Manager of that paper with a handsome gold locket. Mr Senior’s connection with the New Zealander ceases in consequence of the recent chan-.-e in the proprietorship. The first shipment of wheat brought by railway from Wairarapa arrived on Saturday last. This wheat was grown by Mr J. Masters, on his property at Waihenga, and consigned to Levin and Co. for shipment. Mr Ashman, telegraph operator at Gisborne, has been asked to go to the Sydney exhibition as champion operator of the Australian Colonies. The Chronicle says the Tlegraph Department, Wellington, undeitakes to pay Mr Ashman’s expenses. A number of Ins supporters to-day presented Mr Win. Hutchinson, late Mayor with a purse of sovereigns and a handaomly bound illuminated address. The Customs revenue for Wellington for the month of March is £20,036 11s 6d ; corresponding month last year, £ls, 578 9s.
