The Premier in the Lords last night, at the opening of Parliament, said the progress of the treaty of Berlin was highly gratifying. He defended the Sultan against attacks, and eulogised Layard. Referring to Afghanistan, he declared India henceforth invulnerable.
Northcote, in the Commons, alluded to the difficulty consequent on the disappearence of the Ameer, and maintained India was able to bear the actual expenditure of the war.
The Garonne is still aground. It is expected that England will shortly lend two millions sterling to the Indian Government, free, of interest.
The Theatre Royal, Glasgow, has been destroyed by fire. The treaty between Austria and Germany annuls the treaty of Prague, and provides for a plehiscitum of the inhabitants of Schleswig, whenever the return to the Danish dominion is desired.
