OUR VOLUNTEERS.

THE ANNUAL INSPECTION, The annual inspection of the Kumara Volunteer Rifles was held by Lieut. Spence in the Adelphi Hall last evening. There was a good muster of the Contingent,' and after the Inspecting Officer had made a minute examination- of the arms and accoutrements, the men were put through the manual and platoon exercises. Ac its termination Lient. Spence inspected all the arms and other Government property in store, and expressed himself highly satisfied with the state of the rifles generally, although in one or two instances the owner’s attention was drawn to the far from lustrous appearance their ramrods presented. THE DISTRICT PRIZE FIRING. The annual firing for the First Set of district prizes, presented by the General Government is now completed, as the last squad of local men fired this morning, under the superintendauce of Lieut. Spence. The conditions were seven shots at 200, 500, and 500, yards; Wimbledon targets and scoring. Owing, however, to the heavy state of the atmosphere, the smokl from the rifles hung on the range, making the‘targets very indistinct and materially affecting the scoring. The following are the scores throughout the district in the First Set:—

In the event of a tie in the total score, the best score at the longer range decides the precedence. This being the final firing of the First Set, the prize winners are as follows :

First prize, £4, Sergt. Davies, Hokitika, with a total score of 66 Second prize, £2, Lieut. Munyard, Kumara 62 Third prize, £l, Sergeant Brogan, Greymouth 62 Fourth prize, £l, Private Paul, Hokitika 60

The firing for the Second Set was not completed when we went to press.
