Telegraphic communication on the Port ■ Darwin line is restored, and the Madras cable is interrupted fur repairs. At the public meeting hold ro the : Education Reserve on Tuesday evenin" :Mi-Harff, M.H.R., iu the course of his : remarks said that directly the report of i the Gold Holds Commiitoo \v,*w received bv j the House he at once tel-jgraphed the ' report to this paper ; and not only that, j he pre-paid the mess. go. As the report j was of great hiterc.ii to the residents of ! the Reserve here, it naturally followed that we should only too gladly have ; availed ourselves of the honorable- uieui--1 bers courtesy, and have given publication
to the message referred to; but the telegram never having been delivered at this office we were unaware it had been forwarded until spoken of by Mr Barff. Cases such as these demand a most careful and strict inquiry at the hands of the Government, as not alone are we deprived of important intelligence, but the honorable member suffers pecuniarily and to no purpose in the interests of his constituents. Telegrams for the Australian Colonies and United Kingdom, per steamer Arawata, via Bluff, will be received at the Kumara Telegraph Station up till 10 a.m. to-morrow (Saturday). In response to advertisement, about twenty Scandinavians met at the Theatre Royal last evening to consider the readiest and most practical manner to assist Mrs Godfedson, whose late husband was well known both here and at Goldsborough amongst the mining community, and whose death has left his wife and three children utterly destitute. Unfortunately as she cannot speak the English language this materially affects her procuring employment. After some discussion it was unanimously agreed to give an amateur dramatic performance on her behalf at an early date, Mr Anderson kindly giving the theatre for the occasion.
The funeral of the late Miss O'Reilly, which took place yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended by residents both of this and the other side of the Teremakau, the deceased having been amongst one of the earliest to settle here on the opening of this goldfield, and by her genial disposition making many friends. An error occurred in our report of the proceedings of the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. The case of the Borough Council v. Davidson was withdrawn, not " dismissed," as erroneously stated. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association lately, it was decided on a programme to include 16 matches, in which the aggregate prizes vary from £25 to £75. The total to be fired for is £6OO, or more if subscriptions come in. Thi3 sum is exclusive of plate and other prizes presented by private individuals, and some very handsome prizes have already been promised in this way, No entrance fee exceeds ss. Sergeant Christie has left with the tents and targets, to arrange the ground. Special matches are arranged for non-Volunteers.
The great Diorama of the adventures of Livingstone and Stanley will be exhibited at the Public Hall to-morrow evening. From the very favorable notices we observe the Diorama has received in various other parts of the Colony where it has appeared, it should be well worthy of a visit. The lecture by Mr Raymond, descriptive of the various scenes exhibited is, we understand, of »highly interesting nature.
We are requested to draw attention to a notification that appears in another column by which it will be seen that Mr Finlayson, hairdresser, has removed from his late premises to those formerly occupied by Mr Cameron, photographer. There is trouble in the Land Tax department. The valuations were to be made on IstJFebruary, and yetonthe3oth January a Gazette is issued containing "thefollowing additional appointments of valuers under the Land Tax Act, 1878. '«They are seven," and they replace seven disgusted individuals who, to use an expressive idiomatic phrase, "have given it best. "The valuers in many places have had much more laborions work than they had bargained upon, and not only have some retired from business, but others would not remain until they received an increase of salary. One of the last ideas is that girla should be taught to ride on both sides with a reversible crutch to the saddle (remarks Mayfair), and the medical profession appeal's to recommend the practice, as inducing a straighter carriage of the body. Since the Princess of Wales' illness, and the aft"ection;of the knee from which she unfortunately suffered so much, she has always ridden on the wi'ong side of the saddle, or what We are accustomed to think is the wrong side, and did we not know hur fair face so well already we sho ild easily distinguish her in the R>w by this fact. Her Royal Highness, however, does not appear in the least decree mc >iu;iK)dod by the change, and rides a.i g-ao-ofiilly, and with as firm and apparently safe a seat, as ever s-.ie did.
