RIFLE MATCH.
A match that has excited some interest in Volunteer circles came off at the Rifle Range on Tuesday, between a Hokitika and a .Kiunara representative. The conditions of the match were: —2OO, 400, and 500 yards, ten shots at each range; Wimbledon targets, 1873, and scoring; £5 aside; eacli side to nominate a representative on behalf of the respective places. The name of the Hokitika representative did not transpire until his arrival here, when it pro ,’ed to be Seigt. Davies. For Kiunara, two representatives had been spoken of, both young shots in the corp;, but owing to indisposition they neither came to the front, and the otticer-iu-commaud of the local corps hud to do battle on its behalf. Volunteer Brennan (for Kutnara), and Vol. Evans (for Hokitika) were present with the marker in his butt, throughout the contest. The scoring at 200 and 500 yards was above the average, but at the 400, the local representative came to grief. The total scores, however, were tar in advance ot those made in other parts oi the Colony, as we notice that in Auckland (which is a large’ Volunteering di.->tnct), in firing for choice of i eprcseutativcs to proceed to the .Nelson
Rifle association meeting, the conditions being exactly similar to this match, thS thtee highest semes were 87 87 arid 88) enabling the lucky scoi-Crs to represent Auckland at the first meeting of the NeW Zealand Rifle Association*.
