A most favorable report of crops in the Taieri district has been received, and the fruit .season is reported to be the best for years. De Latour, M.H.R., for Mount Ida, will address his constituents at the end of the month. The foundation stone of the new Roman Catholic Cathedral will be laid on the 26th inst. The portion to be first completed will seat 900 persons. The quarterly returns of the Education Board show 135 schools open in Otago, employing 189 male, 129 female teachers ; children on roll to the. end of the quarter, 16,078, comprising 8291 boys, 7787 girls; average attendance for quarter, 7046 boys, 6445 girls. Tiie Secretary for the Society for Promotion of Savings Banks in Schools has received a letter from the Government saying it is inteuded to have everying perfected so as to admit of the inauguration of the system taking place on the re-assembling of the schools. The Education Boards are to be immediately communicated with,, and a circular of general application is being prepared for the schoolmasters, which will be issued from Mr Hislop's office, Wellington. The Attorney-General left Dunedin for Christchnrch this morning, and expects to return with Mr Macandrew in about a week. The local papers publish good accounts of prospecting iu Waitahuna cement. A laborer named Regan mistook a bottle of concentrated solution of caustic soda for beer. He took a drink and suffered horribly, but is recovering. It is reported that G.B. Varley's services at the theitre were I'Mislv crowded last night. A tire brok" out in the promises of a Chinaman, Ah Ting, in Colombo street, through the explosion of crackers, which
formed part of the stock. Though in a dense block of buildings the fire was confined to the house where it began. Much damage, however, was done to other houses and goods in them, partly by necessary measures for extinguishing the fire, and partly.by the carelessness of volunteers in removing goods. Ah Ting's total loss is supposed to be £3OO. Many others lost heavily, a photographer named Schouruss, ,to the extent of £BOO, being the largest looser. Auckland, January 13. Colonel Rosemault, late American Consul left unexpectedly by the City of New York "for San Francisco. Several friends desired to say good-bye. An old soldier named Hill, formerly of the 51st Regiment, was found dead in his residence. He claimed to have been in Comma and Waterloo, and was 105 years old. The yacht Zodiac has been missing for a week. Sh went out on a fishing expedition with one. day's provisions and a crew of Fred Matsott and two boys named Quinn and Healey. Considerable anxiety is felt, and boats are out searching. William Tirrell, seamen of the Taiaroa, who received an accident to his spine at Onehunga wharf, died this morning.
