The betting for the Cap at the start was— i to 1 agst Melita (tk) ; 10 to 1 agst Calamia, Firebell, and Wellington (tk) ; 12 to 1 agst Chester (tk) ; 15 to 1 agst (tk) ; 16 to 1 agst Auckl-ind (tk) ; 25 to 1 agst Warlock, Swiveller, and Stratheam (tk) ; 33 t >1 agst Tom Kirk (off) ; 35 to 50 to 1 agst the others. Watsun took charge of the thirty competitors punctually to the appointed hoar (four o'clock), and at the very nr.it attempt
succeeded in effecting a magnificent start. Before many yards had been traversed Waxy was observed to hold a clear lead, while to his right Rurwood, Strathearn, Newminister, and K.C.B. held prominent positions in front of Melita, who was on the extreme outside of the course, abreast of Emily and Rapidity in the centre, and Tom Kirk hugging the inside rails. The tan and sand tracks on the training ground were crossed at a tremendous pace, and here Rapidity threaded his way to the front, holding a commanding advantage as he approached the distance, his nearest associates being Tom Kirk, still keeping on the inner running, Auckland going on the next, with Chester showing conspicuously on his quarter, slightly ahead of Wellington, Glengarry, Warlock, ind Firebell, who headed the body of the aeld. Passing the stand enclosure Rapidity did all he knew to force a length in front of Tom Kirk. Then came Glengarry, Chester, Waxy, Swiveller, Wellington, Firebell, Newminister, and Emily, all of a cluster, the remainder well up, with the exception of Columbus, who was steering a very wide course, lengths behind Device and Pride of the Vale. At the turn Rapidity had increased his lead to two lengths, Wellington, who here ran into third place, being a similar distance behind Tom Kirk, with Chester lying in a good position on the inside of the Derby winner, Firebell next, half a mile before Glenormiston, who headed a compact contingent, amongst which the colors- of Calamia, Warlock, Newminster, Strathearn, Swiveller, and Melita were prominent. As the imposing cavalcade stretched along the river side, Chester, who was selfishly hugging the inside running, suddenly became hemmed in, and was forced against a post, which snapped with the force of the blow, Morrison becoming instantly unseated, and unfortunately breaking his left leg. This contretemps caused Glengarry to swerve inside the post, thereby destroying the grey's chance, when he seemed to be going remarkably well. Rapidity continued at the head of affairs as they approached the bridge, there being but little difference in the foremost positions,. exept that Waxy changed places with Tom Kirk and Calamia, crossing on the leaders, barely clear of Wellington. The latter was two lengths in advance of Strathearn and Warlock. An unmistakeable tail presented itself as the field streamed around the back of the course, Rapidity still persevering with his cutting down Laertes. At the abattoirs Cnlamia deprived Waxy, "who had dropped back to the fourth place of second honors, Wellington following on fifth, ahead of Strathearn, Glenormiston, Swiveller, and Macaroni, who had crept up almost unperceived on the inside with Melita, apparently in trouble, in: the centre of the next batch, consisting of Darriwell, Burwood, Auckland and several other b aten horses. Rapidity eventually succumbed at the scraping sheds, and here Calamia stretched out well ahead of Tom Kirk, Waxy, Wellington, and Strathearn. From this hence the issue was never in doubt, for Calamia came creeping up straight and full of running, whilst all his .opponents were at the whip in hopeless pursuit. Nearing the distance post, Brown took good hold of his horse, who was going Well within himself, and although' the Caiilfield representatives, Tom Kirk and ■Waxy, tried their utmost to overhaul " Black, and all black," it was of no avail, as Calamia came away without an effort, and finally passed the post hard held, a length in advance of Tom Kirk, on whose quarters was Waxy, half a length before Swiveller, who came with a tremendous run from the distance post; Wellington fifth, Strathearn sixth, Glenormiston seventh, K.C.B. eighth, Lockleys ninth, Riverton tenth, Device absolutely last, some lengths in the rear of Pride of the Vale and Franciscan.
