ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
AT AUCKLAND. [press agency.] London, September 12. The dreadful disaster to the Princess Alice steamer on the Thames turns out to be move calamitous than was at first supposed, including numerous children. Of fully 800 persons on board, only 120 were saved. 623 bodies were recovered up to the 11th September. There has been a week of funerals. Bodies which were not identified or claimed have been buried at Woolwich. The Mansion House fund, headed by the Queen and Royal family, amounts to nearly £IO,OOO. The vessel divided into two by the collision lias been beached. During the past week four railway collisions took place, in every instance by mineral and goods trains. Several lives were sacrificed. A frightful colliery explosion has occurred at the Abercorhe coal pit, twelve miles from Newport. The number lo3t is about 280. 84 men were brought up. alive, nearly all more or less injured. Exploring parties have failed to get beyond a few yards from the bottom of the shaft; the pit being on fire, the air had to be shut ofF. It is expected that the mine will have to be flooded. The Prince Leopold steamer, with 600 excursionists, narrowly escaped destruction on the rocks near the Isle of Wight. The court-martial upon the survivors of the Eurydice acquitted everyone of blame. Ouran, the valet of Judge Keogh, is fast recovering from the wound inflicted by his master. A discovery of the unburied remains of seven children, on the premises of an undertaker iu old Kent road, caused an outburst of indignation. The windows were smashed, and the shop wrecked. There is great agitation at Brighton respecting the gambling hells established in that town. . The Queen remains in Balmoral till the middle of November. The Prince of Wales accompanied the King and Queen of Denmark to Germany. The Duchess of Edinburgh and the infant princess are both doing well.
Musur Pasha has left London for Constantinople ; and Midhat Pasha has been summoned home by the Sultan. 'An impression prevais that the delay in«onfirming his appointment as minister? of Egyptian Finanace arises from the-ppposition of the French Government. '
