The Government have acceded to the application made, on behalf of the principal morning journals of the South Island, for a special wire from 9 p.in. to 3 a.in., but in the case of Tirnaru and Oamaru, to 1 a.m. only. Christohurch, September 24. Since the opening of the railway a considerable number of bußine<s people from Dunedin are looking out for places in Ohristchurch to form branch establishments. Early this morning some persons went into the gardens of Mr Williamson, of Sydenham, and cut down and destroyed fruit trees to the value of £SO. A fev days ago Mr Williamson opposed the granting of a license to a hotel in the neighborhood, aud this is thought to have something to do with it. The well-known thoroughbred sire, Javelin, arrived by the Taupo from the north to-d«y. Several cases were heard in the It.M. Court to-day. They were brought on as a warning to parents under thu Vaccination Act. In the cases in question the parents had not brought their
children for inspection after they had been vaccinated. The cases were all dealt with lightly, but in future the full, penalty will be inflicted. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. Wellington, September 25. At the ordinary weekly meeting of the Tramway Company, held yesterday, the manager submitted the returns, showing the enterprise to be making satisfactory progress. The average weekly receipts have been £2OO, against working expenses £ll4, leava profit of £B6 per week. It is expected that when the line is in thorough working order the receipts will be materiallyaugmented, while the increase ofexpeusos willflbe but nominal. The traffic is reported to be steadily increasing. The returns for the week ending Saturday show 15,376 passengers, against 15,178 during the previous week.
