A private telegram just received from Hokitika, states:—"Mr Sedclon raised pojnt-that Mr Hirter, not having specially authorised anyone to move, motion to rescind must lapse. The Council then adjourned for fortnight. A minute later,
in came Mr Hirter, who at risk of life, had crossed Hokitika river. The scene that occurred afterwards can be imagined." A public meeting will take place at Dillman's Town on Friday evening, to ascertain what support the Prospecting Association will receive from the business people of that township in the event of prospecting parties being sent out in the direction of the Ohristchurch road. A large tree in being felled this morning near the Hospital Reserve, fell not exactly in the place where it was intended, and one of the larger branches struck the roof of a two-roomed cottage at the back of the Tramway Hotel, smashing it in. Fortunately the occupant was out at the time. Tenders are advertised for letting on tribute the Napoleon Hill gold mine, to close on Monday, 14th October. The Waipara went out early yesterday morning to tender the Maori in the roadstead ; after transhipping passengers and cargo, the Miori proceeded on to Greymouth, where she found, on arrival, that the bar could not be worked on account of the heavy sea running home. For the same reason (the West Coast Times reports) the Waipara could not enter in here, and both vessels had to rough it outside all night. We hope, however, the weather will prove more favourable to-day, and allow us to chronicle their being berthed at the respective wharves, though up to the time of our going to press, there was every appearance of a continuance of the present boisterous weather. It was thought that on account of the very unpropitious weather last evening, the meeting of chessplayers to take place at Rugg's Hotel would be postponed, but shortly after the appointed hour there proved after all a goodly muster ; and 16 entrance-fees were received. It was resolved that after paying expenses, the balanoe should be appropriated to the purchase of cheßS boards and pieces for the use of players either at Rugg's Hotel or at the Institute (the two at the Institute not meeting requirements) ; said boards and pieces to become the property of the Kumara Chess Club. Messrs W. 0. Palmer (Dillman's Town) and C. Janion (Kumara) were appointed captains, and, after putting the 24 competitors as nearly as. possible from the knowledge thuy possesed of then? play one against another, chose their men alternately, with the fol-
The match is to take place on Saturday next, some couples playing at the Literary Institute and others at Mr Rugg's Hotel. The side which wins most games will be declared the victors. All gameß which may not be finished by 12 o'clock- Saturday night are to be decided by the two captains. Exceptions are to be made in the time for play in two or three cases where the parties cannot attend on Saturday. Most of the players are considered to be very evenly pitted, and a closelycontested and interesting match is anticipated. It is said, upon, very fair authority, that the purchasers of Langdon's mining lease were prepared, if there had been any competition, to go to the extent of double the amount they paid. We (Grey River Argus) understand that the purchasers have allowed Langdon to buy in again on reasonable terms, and that it is the intention to open up the reef thoroughly as speedily as possible. The property left by the late Mr John Symons, the sole representative of the firm of N. Edwards and Co., t the owner of the Anchor Line of steamers, is valued at about £300,000. By the terms of his. will, it is stated, all his property will be realised, and the money invested on behalf of his widow and family. The changes which will thus ensue will effect in less or great degree very many Nelson residents. For miraculous cures 'by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Advt.J
