[press agency.] Wellington, August 26. Three engines and three carriages have been running all day, the carriages were full each way, and over 1200 people travelled up to three o’clock. The horses on the roadway sheld a little occasionally, but no accidents occurred. Invercargill, August 26. About 141 b of quartz, fine and coarse, the refuse of prospecting trials of Hare Bros reef, was brought to town tO-day. portions of it were pulverised in a mortar and washed out at the Club H otel, the gold obtained indicating a general return of 12oz to the ton. Christchurch, August 26. At a meeting of the Farmers Club on Saturday the following resolutions were passed ; —“ That this meeting protests against the action of Government in remitting the duty on imported grain and flour while retaining at the same time the duties on timber, corn sacks, &c., and they also think the duty will be very injurious to farmers.” A meeting of the Chambers of Commerce takes place on the same subject this afternoon.
At the same meeting of the Farmers Club it was shown that the brewers’ interest is endeavoring to secure the aid
of other local industries in bringing about a remission of the beer tax.
There was ft ispecial peace thanksgiving serviced yesterday at all the Anglican churches in Canterbury. The football team left Christchurch for Dunedin by first train this morning. The match is fixed for Wednesday.
Dunedin, August 26.: The ceremony of Sinking the last tail of the Dunedin and Christchurch'line took place t<vday between Waikouaiti and Palmerston, in the presence of 200 people. The ceremony was. performed by Mr Blair, assisted by Miss Macandrew and the Mayor of Dunedin.- A lunch took place afterwards.
