TO PRESS AGENCY. LATEST EUROPEAN NEWS. London, August 20. There is great depression a t-Vienna in consequence of difficulties encountered by Austrian troops in their advance into Bosnia.

There is immense excitement at Pesth at the losses sustained by the Hungarian troops. The reply to the statement of the Porte shows that he is unable to stop the insurgents.

Austria has announced further that bloodshed would lead to the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by right of conquest.

The Powers have addressed simultaneous remonstrance to the Porte in consequence of the Porte’s refusal to the cession of Crete to Greece.

Russian papers urge neutral troops to occupy Thessaly. bchouvaloff’s brother succeeds Megentzow as Chief of the Police at St. Petersburg. Emerald, war ship, sailed from Plymouth for Australia. [special TO THE WELLINGTON POST.] London, August 14. A most desperate and successful resistance is being made to the occupation of Bosnia by Austria. The Bosnians are completely triumphant, and have compelled the whole of the Austrian divisions to retreat. The matter assumes a serious complexion l as involving a danger of grave European difficulties and complications.

August 15. In view of the Austrian occupation of Herzegovina an agitation has been commenced in Italy, with the couucenance of Signori Corti aud Crispe, for the ratification of the frontier.

Albania has been offered to Italy but refused, and a demand made for Trieste and the Istrian Peninsula. The Turkish officials are unable to maintain order in Canca, a fortified seaport in Crete, and the safety of the Christian population is threatened. Two Tui’kish men-of-war and English and French gunboats have entered the harbour to prevent an outbreak.

, Bismark has sent an ultimatum that Turkey must comply with the Berlin treaty, and withdraw all support from the Bosnian insurgents. Turkey is yielding. The English Government are in favour of the establishment of a large arsenal in an inland town of New South Wales as the only means of effective Australian defence.

August 16 The Queen’s speech at the prorogation of Parliament stated that peace was satisfactory, and likely to be durable, and that Turkish independance was secured against aggression. The Austrian army of occupation has been signally defeated in attempting to take Peinjioo. The Austrians were compelled to make a precipitate retreat, and weie persned by the victorious Bosnians nearly to the border of Dalmatia.

Ausria is initiating military preparation on an extensive seale.

In reply to a remonstrance from the Austrian Government in reference to the military preparations now being made by Servia, the Servian Government replied that these preparations were necessary for the defence of the increased territory given to Servia by the Berlin Congress. The Servians and Montenegrins are supplying the Bosnians with arms and ammunition of war, in order to enable them to resist the attempted Austrian occupation. It is reported that Bosnia and Herzegovina have entered into an agi cement to nuite in resisting the intended occupation by Austria.

It is feared that serious European complications may ensue.

August 17. There are indications of Servia helping Bosnia to repel the Austrian, occupation. Troops have been sent 'from Belgrade to Ratza, effecting a junction with the Bosnians at Loonuia (Lnsnitza).

The chief of the Russian police was stabbed, and has since died from his wounds. The crime was committed from political motives. The cricket match, Australians v Lancashire, has been drawn iu favour of the Australians, who had 120 to get. and made 47 runs for the lots of one wicket.
