The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1878.

The Borough Council will meet at the usual hour this evening. Telegrams for the Australian colonies, per Alhambra via Bluff, will be received at Kumar a Telegraph Station up till 10 a.m. Saturday, 24th inst. The following tenders have been accepted by the County Council, .for making the track from Dilhnan’s Town to the Christchurch road : Section No. 1, M. Donoghue... £197 Section No. 2, M. Donoghue... 18G Section No. 3, M. Donoghue... 205 . Section No. 4, M. Donoghue... 249 Section No. 5, Morris... ... 199 There wore 63 different tenders sent in for the various sections. It has been our pleasing duty on. many occjisions to chronicle the promptitude and energy exhibited by our local Fire Brigade in cases of fire, and also to record the undeniable fact that the alarm is often given by the warning notes of the bell almost simultaneously with the first appearance of the destroyer. Practice evidently makes perfect, iis to-day we were agreeably surprised to find that even this can be surpsssed, and we actually heard the alarm raiser before wo discoved that the object for which it was giving tongue was the smoke issuing from one of our own chimneys. After taking voluminous evidence on the subject, we are enabled to report for the information of the public as follows : That on or about noon this day a person in our employ to wit, the devil, did of his own free will and with cold aforethought deztrously place on the press-room fire a piece of wood, and that the burning of the said wood caused the chimney aforesaid to emit a vapoury cloud, and that the said cloud necessited the bell •being denuded of the snow wherewith it was covered.
