KUMARA PROSPECTING ASSOCIATION.

In accordance with a resolution passed at a meeting of the Association relative to Government aid in prospecting, the Honorary Secretary has forwarded a letter to the Government, a copy of which we have been favoured with. It is as follows : To the Honorable the Minister of Lands Sir—l have the honor t>< acknowledge receipt of letter of the sth inst., in reply to mine 0 f the 24fch ult., hi which I am informed by tiie UnderSecreta'y that the vote of last session in aid of prospecting refers only to prospecting for the discovery of new goldfields. After consulting with the AVarden (Mi Price), the Association has come to the conclusion that you have misunderstood the object which it has in view. When in my previous letter, I stated

that the object, of the Association was “to trace the leads at present being worked on- the Kumara goldfield and to open up fresh auriferous country,” I did not intend it to be understood that the Association proposes merely to extend the p>eseut field. It is, on the contrary, intended to prospect the country at gome considerable distance from the present goldfield. taking tbe known leads simply as indications which may assist in finding auriferous country miles ahead of them. I would therefore jepeat that the object of the Association to find FitGSH AURtFEROCJS COUNTRY, and, this being the case, would ask you. to be good enough to inform the Association what forms it will be necessary for it to go through in order to obtain the aid provided by the Assembly last session.

Irt conclusion, I beg to point out that the Association is deserving of the sympathy and assistance of the Government, inasmuch as it proposes to devote both time and money towards retaining in the Colony a large number of men who will have to leave it if fresh country is nob opened up. I have the honor to be, Your obedient servant, James Wylde, Hbn. Sec. Knmnva Prospecting Association. Knmara, 3lst July, 1878.
