GENERAL ASSEMBLY

[press agency.] LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wellington, July 31. In the Legislative Council last night Cdonel Whitmore brought up the Address in Reply, which will be considered to-day. Several new Bills were, introduced, and the usual committees appointed.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Wellington, July 31. In the House, after committees were appointed, &c., Mr Seymour Thorne George moved the Address in Reply. He said, as being one of the youngest born to political life, and probably uhe youngest memhe.r, he hoped the House would regard his first speech with leniency. He then referred in the usual manner to the Governor’s speech. Mr Hobbs (of Auckland) seconded. A somewhat animated debate ensued. Dr. Wallis (of Auckland) said that last session he supported Government, and would continue to do so as long as they practised principles professed in Opposition, but already their practice did not altogether square with their professions. He complimented the proposer and seconder; both gentlemen, in their innocence, evidently believed in the honesty of Ministers. Their faith was refreshing, but after they had been in Parliament as long as be had, they would find out that Ministers were not always worthy recipients of such childlike faith. Mr Fox followed, against the Government. Mr Sheehan defended, in a lengthy speech. Major Atkinson and Karaitini said a few words, when The motion was carried. The address was agreed to be presented to the Governor this morning. The House rose at midnight.
