A young man named Joseph Fail was drowned at Rangitukpama on Saturday last. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. FIRE AT MASTERTON. WEST COAST RAILWAYS DEPUTA* TION. Wellington, July 23. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Wool cock, and George, M. H. lis., waited on Mr Macandrew, re connecting the East and West Coasts by a railway, and also Greymouth and Hokitiica. Mr Macandrew said the Government were so impressed with the importance of the scheme that they would not hesitate a moment in undertaking the work at once ; but that other works of more immediate necessity required their attention! In the meantime, provision had been made for extending the line from Amberley. In reply to a suggestion by the deputation, that Government should subsidise a steam-tug for Hokitika, Mr Macandrew said this was a matter the Government could not undertake ; such questions were left to I: arbor Boards. A large fire occurred at Masterton early this morning. The stores of Wm. Wyiie, Girdleston, Sellar and Hales, and the Wairarapa Register Office are .burned down. The fire began in the latter place, but the origin is unknown. It is supected to be the work of an incendiary. Previous to the fire being discovered an explosion was heard in the Register Office, and then the | flames spread rapidly. The estimated | loss is between i'20,000 and .£30,000. ! Some goods from Sellars and Hales' store were savfed; but were much | damaged by the rain j rest are a xotal , loss.
