The steamer Arawata, bringing the Suez mail, arrived at the Bluff yesterday. Telegrams of English and Australian news by 'her are given in this issue. We are glad to observe from a telegram received by us from Wellington to-day, that the new-elected member for this district,, in connection with the Grey valley ■fend Ross members, have waited upon the Government and brought under their notice the question of a railway between Hokitika and Greymouth. From the reply of the Government to the deputation we may reasonably expect some provision will be made for this undertaking during the ensuing session. A telegram from Reefton, published by our morning contemporary, the West Coast Times, speaks of the Caledonian claim as looking well. • .The reef is two feet eleven inches, and is showing good gold. Applications are invited from skilled miners to prospect the country between Kumara and the sea beach, in parties of three men. The applications must be addressed to the Secretary of the Prospecting Association, and forwarded before noon of Monday, the 29th inst. The Hospital Committee will hold their usual fortnightly meeting this evening. The plans for the new building have been received from Wellington, and as the question of calling for tenders for its erection will be under consideration, the at- | tendance of every member is highly desirable.
A meeting will be held at the LiteraryInstitute to-morrow evening, to receive the report of the sub-committee appointed to draw up new rules and regulations for the society.
Tenders are invited for the construction of a portion of the track between Dillman's Town and the Christchurch roacl. PLIII3 and specifications can be seen at Mr Seddon's store, Seddon street ; and tenders must be forwarded before n >on of Wednesday, August 14th, addressed to the County Chairman, Hokitika. After their match with eighteen players of Hull on the 18th inst., the Australian cricketers arranged to play Cambridge University on the 22nd. REUTER'S TELEGUAMS. [SPECIAL TO PRESS AGENCY.] MR, GLADSTONE AND MR FORSTER ON THE TURKISH TREATS MEETINGS IN ITALY. SIR B. O'LOGHLEN IN VICTORIA. London, July 22. Mr Gladstone, at Southwell, and Mr Forster, at the Cobden Club, denounced England's treaty with Turkey. Enthusiastic meetings have been held in Italy against Austria, and in favor of Greece. July 15. In the. House of Commons Mr Sullivan raised a question whether Sir B. O'Loghleti's acceptance of office in the Victorian Government does not vacate his seat in the House of Commons, to which he was elected by an Irish constituency. The Attorney-General replied that the decision ou the question rested with the House. The subject will be renewed on Wednesday. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, July 22. Young Bezique won the Waterloo Coursing Cup j Paul Pry, second. Electric won the Plate; Rowena, second. Dr. Bradford remains in gaol. The Court will give the most stringent judgment, in order to prevent him touching his wife's property.
