LoNDOtf, May 10. Baker Pasha's appointment to the command of a division occupying part of the defensive lines of the capital, is regarded with satisfaction at Constantinople. The line 3 are occupied by 90,000 men, and forceß are constantly arriving frm Asia. The Sultan inspected hi* troops last week.
The Dnke of Edinburgh has been transferred from the command of the Sultan to the Black Prince, the crews of the two ships being changed. The Black Prince is at Malta, and remaius part of Lord John Hay's squadron. The Duchess returns to Russia, the Duke accompanying her a portion of the journey. She will, however, spend some time in Oohnrg> Sir J. Ferguson has recently been entertained at a banquet by the Greenwich Conservatives, who failed to return .him to Parliament in the late election contest.
Colonel Wellesly has been appointed first Secretary to the Euglish Embassy at Vienna.
Tn anticipation of the elections of the new Parliament in autumn, candidates are everywhere working the constituency, arid many old representatives have signified their intention to retire. News from the Cape is very disquieting.
General Thesighei* has rendered himself extremely popular with the Cape Volunteers.
A writ of habeas corpus fof the production of the Rev. Mr Dodwell from Broadmore Criminal Lunatic Asylum, with a view to his discharge, was refused by the judges. A remarkable will case has been proceeding for the last three -weeks in the Irish Probate Court. Mrs Bagot, grand-daughter of the late Sir W. Verner, challenges the will of her husband, Mr A. Bagot, who had large estates in the west of Ireland, and has amassed an immense fortune in Australia. She contests it on the ground of unsoundness of mind and undue influence. A son was born shortly after the marriage, and was repudiated by the husband. Some disgraceful disclosures have been made regarJing the Verner family.
Contracts have been made for the supply of one million yards of cloth for the Militia uniforms.
Rumor has fixed upon stipulations respecting the delineations, of the new Bulgaria and the cessions demand in Asia Minor, as those forming the chief subject of contention between the two Governments. It is said that England, supported by France, objects to the extension of Bulgaria to the OSjean sea* board, while hi Armenia she is determined to tolerate no change calculated to compromise her communication with India.
