At the Conference of .Municipnl County Council delegates last evening, it was resolved that in the opinion of this Confidence, the existing, local bodies should undertake the distribution of Charitable Aid until the Government take measures in Parliament for a permanent transfer. The resolution was strongly opposed by the Christchurch delegate, who urged that the Government should not be relieved of the Charitable Aid distribution until permanent arrangements and subsidies be made by a Legislative enactment, otherwise there would be great trouble afterwards to get it done. Nelson, June 28.
A house belonging to Mr Watkins late Manager of the Bank of New Zea<-1 land was completely destroyed by fire last night. It was in an isolated position and not occupied for several weeks, Mr Watkins and family having left for Taranaki. When the alarm was given the fire had firm hold, and when the Brigade arrived their services was of little avail. It was insured in the Victoria Office for £2OOO.
