Dunedin, June 19. At the sale of 21 years' leases of the Harbor Board's Endowment to-day, a telegram was received from the Government withdrawing all opposition. The highest price realished was £5 6s per foot. The buyers were—Docherty, Guthrie, Bradshaw, Proudfoot, Webb, and Elliott. Thirty sections averaged about .£2 17s per foot. The Crawford street block will realise an annual revenue of '.£3500, and with St. Andrew street block, £4OOO.
The alleged llibel case, Macassey v. Reed, is adjourned till Thursday week. The return of land revenue for Otago, exclusive of Southland, for the month of May is £10,643.
At the Waste Lands Board to-day, Mr Bastings, M.H.R., stated that thousands of pounds could be put in the Government chests by setting aside land for township sites. The Times strongly supports Oliver's candidature, and says that at a preliminary meeting last night, Mr Oliver expressed himself a supporter of the Government : he was also in favor of secular education, a land tax, aud manhood suffrage. Wellington, June 19. The Hon. Mr Nheehan is expected to arrive by the Hinenioa fiom Auckland to-mor>ow, and will proceed with Sir George Grey on the same day tri the Waitara meeting. Rewi has not yet ; been invited to take his seat in the Upper House, and it is understood' a good deal will depend on the result of the Waitara meeting whether he will be or not. .. The Court House at Wellington is to be sold whether anybody objects or not. RIVRRTON, June 19. A large and influential meeting was held last evening to urge the Government to complete the Orepuke and Oloutou railway. An immense amount of money is lying idle through the noncompletion of these linen, which were commenced four years ago under ,the Otago Piovincial Government, but which have b-*en discontinued over two years. Resolutions requesting the Government to complete their construction were unanimously carried, and a Permanent Railway committee appointed to see the work carried on. Great interwt is manifested in the result of the di icovery expected to be made when the prospectors at Longwood bottom this week. Work is now vigorously proceeding in a large number of claims; and'a private company has been formed to procure a crushiug battery. Auckland, June 18. It is rumoured a sh'ong candidate will contest Waipa with F. A. Whitaker, in the Grey interest. A memorial will be made to Governmention the opening of next Parliament, on behalf of married policemen, in poiut of house accomodation, in order that they may be on an equal footing with siugle men in the force. A house is provided for single men with a library and other conveniences, but married men are compelled to find their own homes, often within the worst part of the city, it being necessary for them to live within an easy distance of the sta-tion-house. A movement is afoot to establish a temperance hotel. The Masonic lodges of Auckland have received instrnctions not to acknowledge members of the Grand Orient of France and Egypt ou the Ground of Atheism. The Wellington Post's correspondent at Sydney supplies the following : Sydney, June 10: The Fiji planters murmur very much against the rule of Sir Arthur Gordon. An armed party from the Stormbird attempted to kidnap fifteen girls. The Miamia has lauded three castaways. One had died; the others were robbed on board. Sir Arthur Gordon has confirmed the sentence passed on Hunt, of twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor, for the Samoa lynching affair. Christchurch, June 20. Mr Murray-Aynsley addressed his constituents at Lvttelton last hi«hf. He referred to the unsatisfactory character of the last session,, owiny to : .the wa«te of time, compelling a deal of the business of the country to stand over. •Sir G. Grey's action in regard to the. Waste Lands Bill he considered a most unheard-of thing. .The Hon. Mr Fisher was next criticised. "~ The Grey party had always been itching to steal the Canterbury Land
Fund, and Fisher had said'that the Canterbury Land Fund would not be A taken; but he changed his;views when he bad a seat in the Government, and now he followed Sir George Grey in everything. Had the Canterbury members kept together, the Land Fnnd, though bound to go, could have been retained at least another year. He (Mr Murray-Aynsley) opposed manhood suffrage, but favored a system of register*, ing every property-holder and rafce< payer.
