The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 1878.

Mr G. G. FiteGerald will address the electors at the Theatre Royal, this evening, at 8 o'clock. The nomination of Candidates for the vacant seat in the House of Representatives, took place to-day in Hokitika. Particulars appear in our telegraphic columns. Polling will take place on the 26th. The attention of the authorities is directed to the dangerous state of the Zigzag road. In one place there is a masß of earth and roots of several tons weight overhanging it, the ground underneath having been removed some time since, and with the present weather there is every probibiiity of the whole coming down "en masse."

A ball is announced by Mr D. Hannan, in honor of the successful candidate on election day. The old adage of "two of a trade never agree," was thoroughly exemplified in a case heard at the .Resident Magistrates Court this morning when the defendant in an action tried to show the plaintiff had a grudge against him on the ground that "We are both snobs your Worship."

The benefit tendered to Mrs Gaffney by the members of the Amateur Dramatic J Club will take place to-morrow evening, i at the Theatre Royal. The pieces selected ! are "A Batchelor of Arts," and "The ' Lady of Lyons." This performance being • given to aid a person whoso husband hal I been unfortunately seriously injured will, we feel confident, be well attended, as the character of tha public here for contributing to a deserving case is almost to well known to require comment. The New Zealand Gazette of the 10th instant notifies the acceptance by the G >- vernment of the resignation of W. H. ; Revoll, Esq., as Captain of the Greymmtii ; Volunteer Rifle Ranges. i By our telegram a few days ago, it was . reported that two sea lions had buen caught at Ljithfield. The Lyttletm Times says they were captured by Mr Thomas Gibbs on the beach within a mile of <• Leithfield. One of the animals he shot in

the face, the other he struck on the head, killing both of them. The length of the largest one -was 9ft. ; of the other one only 7ft. These are not the first of the kind that have been captured in this locality. Some little time back one was caught alive and kept on view in a paddock for some time. It was then brought to Ohristchurch and exhibited for some time as the " Great Sea Leopard," after w**ch it was sent to the Museum.

Tenders are called for the supply of various articles for the Kuniara Hospital, full particulars of which appear in our advertising columns. The inspection parade of the Kumara Rifle Volunteers will be held to-morrow evening, in the Public Hall at half-past six o'clock sharp. The hour of assembling has been altered on this occassion, in consequence of the benefit to Mrs Gaflney taking place the same evening, to allow members who may be desirous of attending the performance, an opportunity of so doing.

We are glad to observe thai the Inspector of Nuisances has made a general raid on the four footed animals prerambulating this town. From the fact that he succeeded in obtaining judgment in four different cases at the court this morning (in which goats and pigs predominated), against their owners, will no doubt deter many others from infringing the ByeLawß in this respect. The most remarkable railway accident on record happened not long ago on the North Western Road between London and Liverpool. A gentleman and his wife were travelling in a compartment alone, (the train going at the rate of Bixty miles an hour) an iron rail projecting from a car on a side-track cut into the carriages and took the head of the lady clean off, and rolled it into the husband's lap. He subsequently sued the company for damages, and created great surprise in Court by giving his age at 36 years, although his hair was snow-white. It had been turned from jet-black by the horror of that event.

Some experiments have been made at Brussels in breaking horses by means of an electric bridle. The apparatus, called the Engstrom bridle, after its inventor, consists simply in a couple of reins, along which run electric wires. At the end of the reins a small electric battery is attached, which is entirely in the power of the experimenter. By pressing on a little knob the electric current acts on the cornera of the horse's mouth, and after a few consecutive or intermittent shocks, the animal becomes perfectly docile. A very intractable mare was broken in after one experiment with the bridle. The inventor asserts that runaway horses can immediately be brought to a standstill by means of this apparatus.
